Carnival Shipbuilding uses DOCOVA for its Process Management and Automation

The investment in DOCOVA for the management and automation of the shipbuilding business process.

Carnival Corporation is the world’s largest travel leisure company, with a combined fleet of over 100 vessels across 10 cruise line brands including P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises and Cunard Line. The Carnival Shipbuilding division manages the complex process of commissioning, designing, building and outfitting their cruise ships. An existing legacy solution, based on Microsoft SQL Server, had been heavily customised to meet the needs of the business. In the latter years of its use, the solution had become a bit of a “monster”. DOCOVA was chosen as the platform to replace this system and Time Technology was contracted to build the business logic to support the Shipbuilding process.

Solution Overview

When Time Technology was tasked with configuring DOCOVA to replace the existing SQL Server based solution, one of the key objectives was sticking as closely as possible to out of the box functionality. DOCOVA helped meet this requirement, as it includes a large array of standard functionality that can be configured to meet the most complex of requirements, with minimal need for changes to core code. DOCOVA is a fully featured, browser-based, document, process and workflow management system. The DOCOVA solution for this customer manages the approval process for all technical documents required in the construction of a new ship, as well as the automation of importing the many technical drawings. Dashboard widgets give users complete control of their workload and highlight service level. Use of keyword lookups speeds input and ensures data consistency. Users can search quickly and easily across all existing hulls, including the contents of attachments. In order to provide ongoing access to legacy data, some 10 million documents, at around one-half TB, were migrated from the legacy solution. All of this has been achieved at a significant reduction in the annual license fee and ongoing costs over the previous solution.

“DOCOVA was selected for many reasons, including the ease of configuration and usability, and its integrated suite of functionality. When combined, we expect the solution to deliver significant savings and business benefits.

“I’m excited about the potential DOCOVA can bring to our overall Document & Content Management strategy, for improving the management of documents, content and processes within our organisation.”
